Travels | Hiriketiya Bay in Sri Lanka

Travels | Hiriketiya Bay in Sri Lanka

Hiriketiya - the name which was not easy to remember first, but now it will be hard to forget.
A hidden gem on the south coast of Srilanka, where jungle meets the sea.
Away from the typical tourist zones, Hiriketiya bay will offer you surfer waves all year around, beautiful yoga shalas and great eateries on the beach.

We chose to stay at the loveliest place, called “ Le Cabanon”, owned and managed by a french couple, Cassandra and Romain. They made sure we have everything during our stay and answered all our questions. Best hosts ever!

Loved the bohemian decoration and their attention to details. Fresh flowers, natural herb soaps, sri lankan tea were waiting for us. The room had its own kitchen, where we prepared our breakfast every morning and had it in our private garden. Oh and they have a room with outdoor shower - anyone else is in love of having shower in the nature?

Welcome - Le Cabanon

We started our day with a yoga class in the morning ( Dot’s House and Salt House are offering yoga classes twice a day- 8$ for drop in ) followed by surfing ( you can rent a board on the spot for 3 $/ hour or 6 $ a day – bargain! ) and relaxing on the beach ( most of the time with a fresh coconut, which cost 1 $ ) If you need some adventure you can rent a motorbike and go on a lil roadtrip in the surrounding villages. ( the cost of a motorbike is around 5 $ a day)

In the evening you have couple of options to have dinner ( We tried Dots house and Beach House). One night we decided to take a srilankan cooking class in Bluebay Chillout Lounge. The cook was using his grandmother’s recipes. I am so happy we learned how to make different curries and coconut sambol! After we cooked the dishes we had a big dinner. ( all these for 10$ per person)

Since it was off season, there was not much of a nightlife in Hiriketiya. Cassandra (our host at Le Cabanon ) told us there will be a local band ( The Soul ) performing live at Doctor’s House in Madiha. So we decided to take the 45 minute tuctuc ride and check the gig out. We already knew about Doctor’s House from our last trip (a 200-year-old former Dutch and Ayurvedic hospital which turned into a hotel/bar/restaurant – seriously one of the coolest place I have ever been. )
The night attracted people from different cities in the South coast and we did have an amazing time.

We had 6 days and desire for surf, yoga and nature. Hiriketiya, thank you for giving us all. Till next time!

xoxo
